Free Lessons to Help You Play Guitar Better

What If You Don't Have Enough Natural Talent?

3/3/2018

Have you ever wondered if you have enough natural talent to learn an instrument like guitar?
A lot of people think they need to have "good ears" or a natural creativity to learn to play. Or sometimes people think you have to be gifted physically - just naturally coordinated to play.

If you've thought this way, here are some things that can help you:
  • Most people have average natural talent
    • Its extremely rare for someone to have "perfect pitch" (can identify a note by name instantly) naturally.
    • Most good players and musicians have to deliberately practice to make their ears better. It's not just "automatic".
    • Most people, most great players even, start with an average physical ability. They just practice enough so that it changes into something better.
  • The real secret to getting better, regardless of your natural talent level , is how you practice
    • Anyone can become a good player, or feel confident enough to play some songs for fun with friends or family
    • Practice is mostly about consistency - sticking with it long enough to get what you want from it.
    • Knowing what to learn and learning in the right order helps and can save time

I usually tell people to just ignore natural talent. Whether you have it or not doesn't really matter. What matters is what you do with what you got.

If you really want to be able to play music on guitar then you can do it. Don't let the excuse of natural talent get in your way.
